To prevent this worrying phenomenon from spreading, the easiest thing to do is to stop using plastic bags and disposable plastic items, especially when enjoying a day at the beach, at any outdoor venue or park. Every time a piece of plastic ends up in a waterway, there is a good chance that some mammal, bird or ocean-dwelling creature will mistake it for food. In some cases, this will kill it; in other cases, the toxic by-products will return to our dinner plates via the food chain. The best option is to use reusable multi-use containers instead of one-use-only plastics. Get yourself a picnic set, instead of using disposable plates, cups and cutlery. In the long term, you will save money on reusing your stuff instead of buying disposable products.
